Abstract

The Purpose of this study was to standarize a nerve conduction study (NCS) for the medial calcaneal nerve (MCN). The locations of the medial calcaneal nerve origin relative to the tip of the medial malleouls and proximan edges of the flexor
retinaculum
and extensor retinaculum were found to be variable. But the location of the more distal terminal medial calcaneal nerve branches to the heel was found to be very consistent.
NCS of the MCN were performed on 50 asymptomaic subjects (100 feet). Of these subjects, 42 subjects (84 feet) had reliable, reproducible sensory evoked potentials, but 8 subjects (16 feet) were not recorded with using antidromic technique.
Normal values (mean¡¾2SD0 of 42 subjects were established for onset latency (1.68¡¾0.20msec), peak latency (2.41¡¾0.25msec), baseline to peak amplitude (3.36¡¾1.34¥ìV).
This study is useful in differentiating medial calcaneal neuropathy from medial &/or lateral plantar neuropathy.
